Brown Molar

A slightly unstable hill that sees far more mountain goats than people
Brown Molar
The slopes of Brown Molar Peak, as seen on a previous trip in June

This is a small bump to the west of Canine Peak, near the Hurley FSR. The flat summit plateau is surrounded by steep and loose slopes on all sides. It makes a good side trip from Canine to the west or Beaujolais/Mystery to the east.

I did this as a side trip from Beaujolais. From the Brown Molar/Merlot col, the trail splits, with one branch heading east to Beaujolais and one branch heading south towards Brown Molar. The trail faded out in the alpine and we made our own way to the peak's western slopes.

Several mountain goat trails could be seen. We followed one through some scree to the base of a short but chossy scramble.

The scramble

This took us to the summit plateau, from where a short walk led to the summit. The plateau’s edge had excellent views across to Mystery, Beaujolais, Canine, and Chipmunk. Sadly there were no mountain goats.

On the way down, I found the main goat trail, allowing me to bypass the scramble. Everyone else just downclimbed it. We made our way back to the main trail and headed home.
