Mont Chauve

A pleasant hike near Montreal

Mont Chauve (“Bald Mountain”) is a smaller mountain near Mont-Orford in the Eastern Townships region of Quebec. I did the “Boucle du Mont Chauve” loop as a snowshoe trip with the McGill Outdoors Club in January 2024.

We met at the Longueuil metro station and rented a Communauto car from there, allowing us to avoid most Montreal traffic. The park is only about an hour and a half from Montreal.

The trail went through the forest then looped around Mont Chauve, eventually reaching a viewpoint on the summit. Apparently trees have grown back and the summit is not as “bald” as it once was, but we still got some nice views of Mont-Orford and the nearby lakes.

I would recommend this hike if you're looking for a beginner/intermediate level snowshoe or hike relatively close to Montreal.
